We'll be passing this on our way out of town;
And probably see a few of these before we get out of Oregon;
Not sure if you see this from the freeway when we hit the next state;
But we know you can't miss these when we drive through our 3rd state. {Aren't they beautiful? I love those mountains!}
And at the southern most tip of the 3rd state we both will be a bit nostalgic when we see this beautiful view. {we lived there when we first got married}
And a stop along the way if you can believe it. Our 4th state. Just a couple days here, and then well turn around head back the other way and see all the previous sites again. (phew!)

I found your blog from Stash Manicure. I recommend any of Janet Evanovich- very funny and entertaining. Have a good trip!
Julia Child's book "My Time in France." Or something like that. I read the book, a friend of mine listened to the book on tape. She said it was a really good audio book. Sounds like your off on a fun adventure.
MMMMM.... We drive to southern Colorado regularly and a couple of my favorites were the kids book Holes, and a few adult books, Davince Code and The good Earth...
Safe Travels!
Looks and sounds like a wonderful trip!! The scenery is sooo beautiful!! Have a wonderful and very enjoyable time!
Here are a couple of book CD's that a friend of my daughter's listened to on her road trip..
THE 8TH CONFESSION BY JAMES PATTERSON
It's about the women's murder club tracks a killer with a taste for the super rich..
It has 5 cd's...
***********************
Then..
JUST TAKE MY HEART BY MARY HIGGINS CLARK.. Great murder/mystery.. I love her books and cd's! There are also 5 cd's.
Blessings,
~Lynn
This is my favorite book in recent history, in fact even though it's long, I listened to it twice. My husband also loved it. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. I know you will both love it.
Me and my hubby love listening to any John Grisham book on long car trips. If we have got the kids along, Harry Potter keeps us all entertained. We also like "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose - about Lewis and Clark's trip out west. We listened to this one on the trip moving from NYC to Seattle! Have a great trip!
Your trip sound like a lot of fun! Looking forward to you posts when you get back. I would recommend anything by David Sedaris. His books are made of individual stories from his life...each one very short and he reads them on the CD. He is hillarious! Any of them are good. The last one I listened to was David Sedaris at Carnegie Hall.
Have Fun!
I would go with anything by dan brown or John Grisham since it's you and you hubby. Right now I'm listening to Harry potter books which are great too plus the series is long enough for your entire trip. Jodi piccoult would also be good since you can discuss the debatable topics in the book.
I don't listen to books on tape...so I can't recommend anything. Hubby does listen to all of the Steven King books on tape when he travels for work...
Have fun on your trip! As a librarian, my first question would be, "What kinds of books do you like?" so that I could recommend something similar. I'm a big fan of children's books on audio because you can select titles that are about the same length as each leg of your trip. "By the time we get to Vegas, we'll have finished ____!" If either of you suffer, as I do, from short attention spans, great children's books (and there are LOTS of great ones for kids and young adults) can do the trick. (Sometimes, 15 hours of a single title makes me tune out!)
I like the Alex Rider adventures by Anthony Horowitz, the non-fiction Claudette Colvin (Montgomery bus boycott biography), Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin, Secrets of a Civil War Submarine, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by J. Kelly, or Wendelin Van Draanen's Sammy Keyes books.
You might also like this Twitter-written book by Neil Gaiman & the Twittersphere, a free download:
http://www.sffaudio.com/?p=13878
Or the free Sync young adult audio book download project -- with free audio downloads of new and classic teen fare throughout the summer, including THE HUNGER GAMES! See http://yalsa.ala.org/blog/2010/06/01/psyched-about-sync-free-audiobooks/ for details.
And, of course, your local public librarians are DYING to be asked this question and to loan you handfuls of options, with no expectation that they'll be granted a giveaway in exchange! :)
my husband likes to listen to all the Clive Cussler books on cd, makes the long drives seem like nothing! he doesn't want to get out of the car when he gets home!
"I" seem to ruin any audio books we've tried to listen to on our road trips Ö
I can't keep quiet long enough to listen to them! We've tried it on two different trips and I last about 20 minutes then I gotta yell out, "MOOSE"..."Did you see that dead deer back there"...."I'm hungry"..."I think we should change car insurance companies"...."uh, what did they say". My Husband quiet turns off the CD player and diagnoses me with Diaherra of the Mouth.
I like the Jan Karon series. Its about a small town and the antics of the people in it. The main character being a "Father". It is very clean, no worries about language or content.
Safe travels! I just finished reading A Threadbare Heart by Jennie Nash & I literally wept. Beautiful book but I don't know if it's on cd. Some I have listened to & know you would love.... Seedfolks,& Tallgrass (Sandra Dallas)
We just returned from a road trip and vacation in Eastern Oregon. Thought of you as I passed near your home in your hometown the other day and then again coming back. Wish I had thought of books on CD for our trip - it would have been fun! Have a good trip, my friend, and hope you recommend some good 'reads' for our next trip.
~Adrienne~
looks like a fabulous trip!
my fav book right now is Water for Elephants so i would recommend that. just not sure if it is on cd yet.
How wonderful the trip you are taking, it sure is beautiful country that way ... enjoy!
Have a beau-TEA-ful weekend.
TTFN , Hugs, Marydon
If you like mysteries and are interested in the southwest I would recommed tony Hillerman. He writes from the perspective of a navajo policeman and I have been facinated by his books. Also I am currently reading (on cd as I bind) the camel club series by David Baldachi. Have a great trip.
Last thanksgiving my family and I listend to "the shadow divers" a fascinating true story. we were all riveted, even my 3 kids ages 9-13. Enjoy your trip!
I say The Glass Castle or A Girl Name Zippy, my son recommends Enders Game. Boise capital yeah! If you need a place to sleep, I have extra room! (I'm serious.)
The Thirteenth Tale or Northanger Abbey.
The Help, a Novel by Author Katheryn Stockett. Loved it!
I know you've read THE HELP but on CD it is FABULOUS and if your hubby hasn't read it... Really, three different readers, wonderful voices.
If you want something different though...REDEEMING LOVE by Francine Rivers.
Focus on the Family's Radio Drama of Anne of Green Gables, any of the Lion Witch Wardrobe books, or At Home in Mitford.
Liz Curtis Higgs newest book - Here Burns My Candle.
Have fun!
Seriously, you should take the Harry Potter series along...you will simply not find a better reader than Jim Dale.
Have a good trip. I remember seeing those falls when I was about 14. I don't know it these books are on tape, but I really liked Andy Andrews book "Island of Saints", and also the book "The Shack".
Blessings,
Marcia
If you like adventure/mystery then Clive Cussler would be my choice. His books are lively and would make for good listening!
"The Key to Rondo" by Emily Rodda is an excellent book that could appeal to the whole family. Here's a link to have a look:

I'd recommend 'The Help' or' Sarah's Key' Both are wonderful. Kathie L in Allentown
Wow, those mountains are magnificent! Never seen anything quite like that.
Brenda
I love the Karen Kingsbury books, any of them.
We liked Family by David Balducci on tape. It was long but filled our trip to AZ quite nicely. We usually take about 3 for each trip, that way one a day makes the miles fly by.
Enjoy!
I'd agree with the suggestion of Jan Karon books...they are always nice company.
Happy Trails!
John Sandford has written a series of books about a Minneapolis cop named Lucas Davenport. I have read them all and they are wonderful! The series is called "the Prey series". Any one of the Prey books would definitely keep your attention and the good thing is there are about 15 of them so if you like it, you can get more!
How about a classic like Pride and Prejudice or some other Jane Austen? Or then the new book by Tracy Chevalier, Remarkable Creatures. Have a good trip, enjoy the ride!
Eat, love, pray the audio version on cd is great! It's a perfect listen.
My husband and I listened to The 5 Love Lanugages on CD. It is fantastic and also great for converstaion and discussion with each other!
Beth
Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson! I loved this one. I think both you and your husband would like it:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daudiobooks&field-keywords=gargoyle+by+andrew+davidson&x=13&y=17
I am not sure these are on cd but I loved the Maisie Dobbs books set during and after WWl. I think there are seven now. I have read some of the ones you recommended and loved them so I think you would like these. Linda Gerig

I would recommend "Sarahs key".Hope you have a safe trip!
Make sure you share your choices!

Little Women or one of the other great classics that you most likely once read, but can be enjoyed once again.
I love listening to audio books when I'm on a long car trip. I thoroughly enjoyed The Guernsay Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Juliet Mills reads the part of Juliet. There are probably 5 actors in this one.
One of the best series was the Harry Potter series with Jim Dale doing the reading.
One of my all-time favorite is Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher, but your hubby may not like that one as much.
Every year or so I relisten to the Mitford series by Jan Karon. At Home in Mitford is the first in the series.
Enjoy your trip!!!! Let us know what book or books you bring on your trip.
I have to agree with your first blog post by Laura. Anything I have ever listened to by Janet Evanovich is laugh out loud funny. I really enjoyed Plum Lucky and Plum 13(?).
It really depends on what you like to read. I highly recommend Janet Evanovich but then my sister doesn't like her. The help was wonderful on CD. I love Sue Grafton books on audio and also Earlene Fowler's quilting mysteries. My husband and I both enjoy listening to Bill Bryson's traveling stories when we are on the road. Have fun and enjoy your trip whatever you choose.
Shutter Island, Lightning Thief. It's all I got. Have a great trip!
My favourite this year has been "The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary ann Shaffer. Great characters with a lovely storyline. The miles should fly by.
Suz
I like to listen to anything by Mary Higgins Clark if you like mysteries. I also like John Grisham and Karen Kingsbury. Karen is my favorite author at the moment.
My absolute favorite books are
the Chet the Dog mysteries:
"Dog On It" and
"Thereby Hangs a Tail"
The author is Spence Quinn. Bernie Little is a PI and Chet is his partner and best friend. They are wonderful. Great stories and a hoot to read! You will not be disappointed, I promise!
We love listening to Harry Potter. I just finished reading Shannon Hale's book of Bayern. There's four: Goose Girl. Enna Burning, River Secrets and Forest Girl. Princess Academy was an enjoyable read. Good luck on your road trip and have FUN!
Traveling with hubby I highly recommend anything by Michael Crichton, we have everything he has written on CD. I especially liked Timeline and Eaters of the Dead ( this one is really intersting)

Saw your great blocks on the Stash Manicure. Great job. Have a great trip. I would like to recommend a book that I read last year called The Shack by WM. Paul Young. Our whole family read it.
Harry Potter! Entertainment for all ages.. and the six (or is there seven now?) book series will keep you occupied for the entire trip! Now THAT is a road trip! Been to all those places you posted.. specifically to what is in the photos. :) Safe travels!
How about The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. We have to travel every year 740 miles one way. This one sure helps the miles go by much faster.

Lol...I see someone recommended Julia Child's book "My Time In France"...I just got back from Borders where I saw that book, looks like a good read (or listen). I don't know if anyone else recommended this book yet: "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer I gave it to my Mom for her BD & she absolutely LOVED it. The audio CD is available on amazon :) Enjoy your trip!
Smiles, DianeM :)
I just thought of another series I love. It is The Elm Creek Quilters series by Jennifer Chiaverini. Also G-rated and about quilting. What more could we want.
You should listen to Diana Gabaldon's series The Outlander! Great historical series, with a bit of romance thrown in!
I see you've had a couple of suggestions about Janet Evanovich. She is entertaining, but she can get pretty racey/steamy at times, so take that for what it's worth. I hope you have a good time coming through SLC. Wave as you go past 7200 South on I-15 and I'll wave back :)
You blog is so much fun to read.
Water for Elephnants is a great CD to listen to while driving long days. My hubby and i loved it on a long trip a couple of months ago.
Have fun !
We have friends who listened to all of the Narnia books on CD for a road trip a few years ago. They are both adults with no children, and they really enjoyed it! They thought it was really well done!
Shawna
You should get Dark Tort by Diane Mott Davidson. This book is a murder mystery and it really good. It has some great recipes also. I would recomend any of her books. She has written 12.
"Same Kind of Different As Me," by Ron Hall and Denver Moore.
I love the Mitford series by Jan Karon. However I just arrived home this evening from a trip that took us over 2000 miles. We listened to How Starbucks Saved My Life ( a true story) by Michael Gates Gill and Have a Little Faith by the author of Tuesdays with Morrie -Mitch Albom. My husband i enjoyed them both. One I just finished is To Kill A mockingbird...it was gripping...I hated to shut it off at the end of the ride..could hardly wait to put in the next disc. What ever you listen to I am sure you will enjoy the drive for the scenery alone. Drive safe!
My honey listens to books on his way to SLC every week! :) He suggests "Deception Point" by Dan Brown or "Setting Sail" by Grace Elliot. I hate to admit it, but I only read LDS authors these days. I enjoy anything by Gerald Lund, Jennie Hansen or Claire Poulson. Bring your flip-flops and your sunscreen because your final destination reached 108* today!!! :) Welcome to Nevada! (And if you want to stop by my house to give me a sewing lesson, I would love it! :)
Anything from James Patterson is good. I loved the Maximum Ride series.
My suggestion is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. OR a 5 set Series by Chris Stewart (LDS author) called "The Great and The Terrible" is absolutely fantastic!
Have fun on your trip! Sounds like a wonderful time.
English Major Me recommends "the Classics" like "To Kill a Mockingbird," Jane Austen books, etc.
The Silly Me suggests anything by Humorist Dave Berry or Bill Cosby.
Do you have a Books-a-Million store nearby? We wondered around one this weekend and they had a big ol bin of Book on CD at super sale prices!
When we moved to TN from South Dakota we listened to hours of Hank the Cowdog books by John Erickson! They're written for kids but they have some great adult humor and we howled with laughter for miles. Obviously, we don't take ourselves very seriously:)
I have been listening to Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb - they are all "_________ in Death". I haven't found one that I have been disappointed in. There is a little love story in them, but not much. The main character Eve Dallas is a NY Police Officer in the future and always solves a murder of some sort. I just love them. I don't think they are to "girly" either. You have good suggestions here and I may write a few down myself.
Have a great trip. Laura
Have a great trip. Any of the Janet Evanovich "Stephanie Plum" reads are good. They are a bit racey but they are funny. My husband enjoys them as much as I do. The Quilters series by Jennifer Chiaverini or the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross. OR the Harper Connelly series by Charaline Harris. Murder mystery. Those are my top 4 faves to listen to in the car.
We loved "Memoirs of a Geisha" so much we had to sit in the car at night to keep listening! Seeing the picture of Salt Lake City brought a tear to my eye - our son is in SLC going to college, we're in Massachusetts!
I listened to "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" one year while I was making and wrapping Christmas gifts and loved it. Also, "The Giver" is a good one - the reader's voice totally makes it! Good luck on your trip. We're traveling to your #3 state this summer too but with two little ones in tow. Aa!
The Harry Potter books are great to listen to...thanks for the chance!
We're taking a road trip to Maine for our honeymoon next month and I need to find a book on tape too! He suggested Harry Potter, but I don't know how that would be. lol
"The Help" is hands-down the best audio book I've ever listened to. I think it's better in audio form than any other - just a wonderful rendition by several readers.
I'd also second the Harry Potter books, read by Jim Dale.
A couple other ideas are "The Historian" and any of the Mitford books. If you're an animal lover, James Herriott's books "All Thing Wise and Wonderful", etc. are also good, and especially good for drives - the chapters are short and you can pick up where you left off pretty easily after pit stops.
Road trips are my favorite way to travel. Have a great time!
Have you read "The Help" yet? Very good read about stifled women in the 50's and their colored maids at that time. Also - are you on Goodreads? There's lots of great recommendations on there. My email is iliketoquilt@hotmail.com - if you're interested, send me an email and I'll send you a link. Happy road trip!
What a good idea, listening to books while driving on your trip. I would recommend "The Shack". I listened to it while I was sewing. I'll have to get some books to listen to next time I travel. I may even write down some of the titles from others here.
okay...you've already seen my recommendation on my blog today..."The Forgotten Garden"...
it's sooo good.
While camping my family and I have listened to the "Tennis Shoes among the Nephites" series. It's a great one to listen to and is read by the author himself(chris heimerdinger)....it's really good too.
i can't wait for your trip either because we get to see each other...YAY!

Our favorite travel book(s) was Lord of the Rings. It kept us interested for hours on end. By the way, wasn't that Multnomah Falls? I was born in Portland, lived there until I was 16, and still miss it. Have fun on your trip.
You have to read The Hunger Games. It's amazing! Loved it.
I just can't listen to audio books...too much of a visual person, but I think I could handle any of the Lee Child books. There are tons of them. Most of the books you have on your site, I have read and agree with you for recommendations, so think you will probably like these too. Have a great trip!
Tales of the Ottori! It certainly isn't my typical read (which border more on The Help than action, youth lit), but I fell in love and am on the fourth book in the series. Truly a book that appeals to all tastes and both men and women, adn the youth it was originally written for.
Yay - you'll be driving right past my house! I just finished reading Catching Fire, so my recommendation is BOTH The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. (Although, I'm guessing you've already read them both) Have a wonderful trip!
When my hubby and I moved from CA to Alabama, we listened to the Wicked book on tape. It's something like 40 hours, so interspersed with some music, we made it last the whole trip.
The reading was beautifully done and I found I enjoyed it much more than I think I would have enjoyed the written book because I absorbed a lot of the detail I would have otherwise missed.
The Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman, the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters, the Mitford books by Jan Karon, any P.G. Wodehouse book, Truman by David McCullough, John Adams by David McCullough, A Bully Father (Theodore Roosevelt's letters to his children) by Joan Patterson Kerr, Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding. They are all great! Have fun.
