little item of business; NO-REPLY ?

Yesterday evening I came home from a long day away to tons of comments and emails in regards to the Sew Scraps Along! FABULOUS! What a great surprise in my in-box! THANKS everyone! I am thrilled that so many of you want to sew with your scraps! Can I just say, I am super excited to sew along with all of you!

But we do have a little item of business to take care of before we get the ball rolling. Or the scraps sewing! LOL

PLEASE read this ENTIRE post. I thank you many times in advance...

Many of our "seasoned" bloggers have heard this, time and time again. (sorry, "seasoned" bloggers) but here's the thing. I was SHOCKED and sorta bummed by how MANY of you are NO-REPLY bloggers. I wanted to welcome and thank everyone last night and I couldn't reply to many of you.

What is a NO-REPLY blogger?

1. Suzie leaves a comment on Jodi's blog asking a question.

2. Jodi has all her comments sent directly to her email.

3. Jodi checks her email and reads Suzie's question. Jodi
clicks reply. Shazam! Up pops Suzie's name but instead of her email address, it say's NO-REPLY. Argh!

4. Suzie doesn't have an Email associated with her blog. So no one can reply to any of the comments or questions that she leaves. Boo Hoo.

You may not even know that you are a NO-REPLY blogger. No worries.

Follow these instructions to see if you are a NO-REPLY blogger:

Sign in to Blogger and bring up your Dashboard or Profile Page. Click on EDIT PROFILE.

See the third box down (SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS) there should be a check mark in it.

and
Scroll down; see the section titled IDENTITY. See the box labeled EMAIL ADDRESS. Your Email address should be in that box.

If there is no email in that box or if you don't have the Show My Email Address box checked. You are a NO-REPLY blogger.

#1
ARGUMENT often heard from NO-REPLY bloggers:

I DON'T want my personal email out there for the whole world to see....

Good News! You don't have to. You can set up a "generic" email address to be associated with your blog. (You just need to remember to check it often) (especially if you leave a comment or ask a question on another blog).

CLICK HERE to see my profile. Notice below my photo there is a box labeled CONTACT. Just below that you will see a link that say's EMAIL. If you click on this link, you can email me. AND it also means that I have an email associated with my blog,,, so when I leave a comment on another blog, that blogger can email me a reply. (does your profile show an EMAIL link? If not.... You're a NO-REPLY blogger)

And really the majority of "seasoned" bloggers will agree; It's plain ol good blogging etiquette to have an email associated with your blog. Especially if you're going to be blogging, commenting, asking questions, participating in Give Aways, etc. etc. etc.

Here's your assignment for the day. Check your PROFILE. Are you a NO-REPLY blogger?
Yes? Well I would LoVe it, if you
either use the email you already have, or set up a new "generic" email and put it in your profile.

Use the instructions above to make sure your email is in your profile, and email me with any questions. CEPT! If you are a NO-REPLY. Please remember to put your email address in the body of your email.

P.S.
A new email in your profile WILL NOT CHANGE THE EMAIL ADDRESS YOU USE TO SIGN IN TO YOUR BLOG.

Oh! And the reason I've bored you all to death asking you to read this entire post?

I have it on good authority that several of my bloggy friends are having Give Aways in the coming days. They're helping me celebrate my Sew Scraps Along! And It would be a crying shame if they had no way of contacting the winner.

Happy Scrappy Sewing! ooxx`jodi

Thank you for clearing this up. I had no idea that I was a 'no reply' blogger, and didn't realize I could use a different email address to get mail via my blogger account. I shudder to think of the things I may have missed out on!

Love your blog, by the way!

Thanks for the information. I'm an unseasoned blogger, only had my blog for two weeks and still learning the ropes. I thought leaving my email off the blog was just for the public, but anyone with a blog account could email me. I've fixed it now. Thanks...even if us newbies are annoying! :D

Oops. I think I was a No-Reply blogger! I'm sorry! I had no idea that I had to click those buttons in my profile, so thanks so much for straightening this all out for me. I do appreciate it whole bunches and have already fixed the problem! :-)

so glad to see bloggers posting this too, i've been doing it off and on lately. it's so annoying when someone comments asking a question and you can't reply back to them!

Thank you! I was told a while back that my google reader was listing me as "no email." And for the life of me I could not figure out how to fix it - I hope this fixed it for me with the google account.

I didn't know I was a no-reply blogger. I've changed my profile to show my email. Thanks. Can't wait to start scrap-sewing.

Love how you lay down the law Jodi!! ;)

I truly believe most folks have no clue until they are told! And you did it very accurately and simply. I may have to steal that explanation some day.

I have spent the better part of this evening sorting a big grocery bag full of scraps. I bought them a while back at the Thrift Shop, washed and dried 'em, then left 'em in a big ol mess! I'm pooped now.

Absolutely invaluable information Jodi. Thank you for taking the time to share with us. It saddens me to jump back in my email and not be able to respond to the person who left a kind word. I want them to know it is appreciated. :o)

I can hardly wait to start our sew along! Fun fun fun!! :o)

Sincerely - Tricia

Thank you for this explanation and instructions on how to stop being a NO-REPLY-ER. When I read this I thought I should check my settings and, no surprise, I found that I was one of the notorious. No longer though - at least fingers crossed (Grin)!!! And while I am here, thank you for Pleasant Home. I not only have it listed as a favourite, but also up on my favourites bar. A blog par excellence!!!

Something you didn't cover that I'm interested in knowing....you see my 'display name' is DEBORAH. Well, I'm seeing DEBORAH out there in comments a lot, and I want to clear up any confusion that may be causing. Can I change my "display name" without causing any problems? Something like "Deborah in Atlanta" or "Deborah the Dunce" or something like that? I don't want to cause any more problems than I've already caused. Thanks for clearing up all the issues. Thankfully I must have done something right, because I was NOT a 'no reply'. And are you saying I can change my e-mail address to yet another e-mail address without causing problems? I'm having all my e-mail post updates come to my personal e-mail address, and it's a hassle with everything coming to that one e-mail address. If I set up another one just for blog updates, that would be awesome! Thanks so very, very much for this "No Reply" tutorial. Wow - wonder how long it's going to be before I feel comfortable putting a comment out here without insering my e-mail address at the end? I've always done it because I wasn't sure if I was a 'no reply' person or not. Now I know.

I get great comments and I like to reply to all of them so it's very frustrating when they are a "no reply". This was a great post and I'm sure you have helped many bloggers and visitors. Lynne

Hi Jodi... this is an interesting post. I am NOT a no-reply blogger however... EVERYONE that leaves a comment on my blog shows up that way.

This has been frustrating me for the past week now. I have had many blogger friends chime in with help but to no avail. Just this morning I set up a new gmail account and plugged that gmail addy in... still no-reply, even to the new addy.

It appears to be nothing new with blogger as I have been googling everything I think of in the way of wording to find some answers. That is how I happened upon your blog... very nice, btw... and I am a new follower. :-)

I am a relatively new blogger and this is just a new glitch that has this not-so-savvy computer gal wondering "what am I doing wrong?"

Sorry for the long post... have a wonderful day. If you leave a comment on my last blog post, I will email you back (the comments go to my email) and will show you. That's how I found out it was going on. I was on the phone with a friend blogger telling her... we checked all the settings just as you described in your post. Still don't know what's up.

Thanks so much... Karen

Thanks for this post Jodi. I may even link to it in a future post because I get kind of upset when someone asks a question in a comment and I have no way of answering it.
I have a little blurb in my sidebar but I'm not sure everyone sees that.
Thanks!

Thanks,
