HERE WE GO!
I start off the same way with all my Scrappy projects. Grab a bin, turn it on it's side at my work table and start pulling the pieces I want to use.

I chose these greens and gave them a quick pressing.

I needed narrow strips/scraps. So after pressing them, I used a ruler and rotary cutter to trim the scraps into 1 1/2" widths.

I made a template in the shape of a tree. I placed it on the pieced strips and cut around it.

{update 1/24/11} this template is no longer available. And I gave these mug rugs away. I no longer have the measurements for the tree. SO sorry... guessing and looking at photos on the tutorial, I would say the bottom of the tree is approx. 4" across and approx. 5- 5.5" tall }
Here is my little pieced tree...

{the photos and my instructions are for sewing more then one tree at at time. You can totally make trees one at a time. If you have smaller scraps for your background pieces, making them one at a time would be perfect.}
Now for the background. If you have strips in your scraps or stash that are about 2 1/2" - 3" wide. Use em. Otherwise cut some strips about 2 1/2" - 3" x WOF (width of fabric) for your background.
My background is a White on White Snowflake. Sew the strip to one side of the tree, leaving about 1" between trees.
My background is a White on White Snowflake. Sew the strip to one side of the tree, leaving about 1" between trees.

Press like this:

Then cut like this:

Your trees should now look like this:

Now trim the top as shown:

Sew the other side of the tree to another strip as shown in the photo. Again make sure you leave about 1" between each tree tip. (see photo)

Press as shown:

Now use your ruler like you did for the other side and trim the right side of background fabric.
Then you can sew the bottom piece of the background.
Then you can sew the bottom piece of the background.

Using a quilting ruler, cut the tails and extra fabric off, and wah lah! A cute scrappy tree block!

I decided to use the extra pieced strips, a scrap of red with snowflakes, and my tree block, to make a Mug Rug..

I have made several Mug Rugs recently and have decided that I really like them around 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Have you made a Mug Rug? What size do you prefer?

I grabbed another scrap for the backing;

Did a little quilting and Wah Lah! A cute and cozy little Mug Rug for a mug of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or milk, and enough room to set your cookies too! If you make a 5.5" x 8.5" rug, you'll need approximately 32-36" of binding. I have been cutting my binding at 2" in width and really like it. These were made with 2 1/4" width.

I originally used some Insul-bright for the first Mug Rugs I made. I wasn't crazy about it. Now I just use my scraps of my batting. It's a GrEaT way to use up those little batting scraps!
And looky! I remembered I had this way cute tree fabric in my stash. So I made some trees to match for the front of the Mug Rug and used the tree fabric for the back.

(This tree fabric is from Riley Blake I think the line is called "Be Merry")
Making these mini quilts is SO addicting! The possibilities are endless! Tomorrow I'll share some Inspiration with you. I've found all kinds of Simply Fantastic Mug Rugs out in Bloggy Land to show you!

K. Off you go! Create! Can't wait to see your Mug Rugs! Oh yes. Please do share. Remember I have a flickr group set up for us to share all our Scrappy Projects!

How cute! Now I want to stop what I'm _supposed_ to be doing and make mug rugs instead..... thanks for sharing!
Love the mug rugs! I really like the Riley Blake one! So cute!
I have made a few, I like them because they are small and help me with my quilting and binding! I am new to quilting, so every bit of practice I can get I will take!
Wonderful tutorial thanks!
Your tutorial came just in time! My guild is going to make mug rugs for a gift exchange next month. Thanks so much! I'm sending everyone your way!

Adorable!! What an awesome tutorial...thanks for sharing.
Brilliant thanks! I think even I've got enough scraps for this one- I love your aqua coloured ones!
Sew cute!!!!
I took the plunge and made my first mug rug this weekend. My daughter liked it so much she wanted one for herself "just like Mama's" so I made another. Mine is a bit long and skinny but I don't mind at all. I plan on making more. I love the Riley Blake one with the simple straight line quilting. And your trees are just too cute!
What a great way to use up scraps!
Love the idea of mug rugs! And yours are so adorable with the trees.
Brenda
I love your mug rugs. I have some smaller ones, but I like your size better. I will have to make some of these as gifties, I certainly have the scraps for it.
Brilliant Jodi! My desk always have coffee rings on it. Maybe one of these will help.
Your scraps are lovely, by the way.
I'm jealous.
I'm so in love with these!! Cute, cute!! :)
Super cute! You are good! Thanks for sharing!
Mug rugs are so addicting! I love them too. I need to start digging thru my overflowing scrap bin and find some reds and greens to make a cute Christmas one!!
Your mug rugs are adorable! I made one last week, it is a paper pieced bird and it turned out really scrappy and cute but the binding is not so cute, so I'm keeping it for me and making some more with hopes of better binding!
Hugs
Julie
How cute are those?????
Guess what everyone's getting for Christmas????
I have not made any mug rugs. But I am going to try theses. An early start on some holiday gifts. Thank you so much for the tute!
I love them, thank you for the tutorial!
gracias por este tutorial tan interesante. Un beso
What a great idea. I have a wood table and everytime we have people over for coffee, I have to pull out the huge table mats. Never can enjoy the wood. So, now all I have to do is actually make these (I love to procrastinate) and it will be a wonderful way to coffee
Kathee
I've been seeing them too. I love the idea of a mug rug. Bigger than a coaster and smaller than a placemat. perfect!
Really adorable! I like the smaller size for my sewing desk and desk at work, but this size would be great for the coffee table or end table. Great tutorial!
Those mug rugs are way cute. A perfect hostess gift for Christmas, or any time really.
It's funny how the same thing can be made so many different ways. I belong to a large number of machine embroidery groups and the mug rugs from those groups are actually done as a design. That's a bit misleading to someone that might not have an embroidery machine. What I mean is that the "design" is actually an 'in the hoop design' for our machine which runs on the embroidery portion and it tells us when to add strips of fabric and the before finishing there is on some, an embroidery design that's stitched out and the batting and bottom/back is placed on as well then a satin stitch done all the way around the rug. BUT, the ones in those groups are also a square rather than the larger ones I've been starting to see in the quiting and sewing groups. I'm starting to think I like these larger ones more because you can set something else next to the mug like you have shown in the pictures. Thank you for the tutorial.
Sweet!!!!
SO VERY CUTE!! Thanks for sharing :)
I have made lots of coaster sets - some pieced others not - but had never thought about making 'em wider so your cookies would have a spot! I now know what to make my Aunt for Christmas!
Those are great. I'm going to make some to join in with my Christmas decor. But I was wondering, do you buy the binding or do you use other fabric for your binding? Really I've never used it. I don't even know how to bind a quilt like that. I kind of make up my own edges. And they work wonderful, but I like the way the binding looks. How do you do it?
Really clever idea! they are just too cute! Thanks for sharing! Polly
Wow - these are awesome! Can't wait to make some.
Thank you!
Your mug rugs are just adorable! Thanks so much for sharing. Gotta make some of those for sure.

Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial! I stumbled onto your site looking at the photos of your work room and next thing I knew, I was heading my mine wanting to try this out. I have never quilted before and had to look up some info (like how to do the quilting and binding) and I'm just tickled with the end result!
Am I late to the party? Couldn't comment until after I finished 50 of the little guys and set them out for my work mates Christmas thank yous. They loved them and so do I. Aloha, Jo
I'm in love with your mug rugs. So far the best I've see on the Net and I've been looking for two weeks now. Your tutorial is one of the best I've see also.
You've inspired me to get hopping on those scraps of mine and get busy sewing mug rugs.
Thanks so much for lighting my fire.
I will try my best to post them to my blog when I'm done.
I'm off to get shower and then head to my machine.
Thanks for sharing.
