Great Granny Along - Week 4

I was thinking... maybe you'd like to see how I organized myself for the GREAT GRANNY along...

Organized for the Great Granny Along
I think sometimes I enjoy organizing my projects more than sewing them! LOL Well not really... But you know what I mean...

I started off with one of my project boxes...

Then I printed off my Inspiration pics I found on the Internet....

I sat them in front of me at my cutting table and started digging through my Scrap Baskets...

I started with the center squares and cut 24 of them (my quilt will have 24 blocks in it. 4 blocks across and 6 blocks down)

Then I cut the next round of 4 matching squares for each block....

And continued to cut for each round of the block...

When I was done I had 24 blocks prepped and stacked together...

I put each block in it's own separate baggie and into my project box.

So.. When I have a few minutes here and there... I grab a block in a baggie and get to work.

I use my larger Design Board to lay out the block and start sewing and pressing. The Design Board helps to keep my fabric pieces in the right order. In just minutes I have a completed block !

Lori introduced me to Design Boards and you must check out her tutorial if you don't know about them. You can find it HERE.

My project box is ready and waiting for when I have a few spare minutes to sit down and sew again!

Here are 2 more completed blocks. I'm totally in love with the yellow, green and red block. I think I want a whole quilt in this block with these colors!

Your blocks look great! I love the yellow/green/red one, too! :O) Great idea to cut and organize like you did so when you have a few spare minutes you can get a lot done! I do love Lor's design boards! I made about a dozen smaller ones for Farmer's Wife and I want to make a large one for this quilt - they work so well!

Thanks for sharing that. I have some fabric set aside for some granny blocks but can't get going, don't know where to begin, AND I don't want to make my usual mess!

Thanks for the inspiration. I've made a couple blocks so far but it's kind of overwhelming when I stare into my scrap box. I think your plan is brilliant and hope to get myself organized today! Love your colors by the way!

Your POST are so encouraging! I love the way you work with color.

I have a question - your project box? Where can I find ones like yours?

Thanks!

I think it is good to be organized. Like you said, now you can just grab some fabric and sew when you are ready. Pretty blocks.

I just LOVE these granny squares. A simple kit makes them easier to keep going on a project like this. Wonderful.

There has to be something to say about organization. That's why you get your work done and I don't....smile. I do use a board. I can't think past one block at a time. This method would definiately keep my sewing room in better shape. I have stacks of fabrics all over my room for the different projects I start and never finish. I'm about to drown in stacks.

Great idea to prep the blocks and have them ready to sew! I realize that sometimes I just have a small amount of time to sew...with everything cut and prepped I could sew a block in no time. Thank you so much for the tip!

I like the way you organise projects in the cute little box with bags, I tend to use bulldog clips.
Loving those blocks! =D

I do the same as you, I wanted to see if I found them easy so I cut out three squares and had them all ready to go to machine. I am planning a big quilt so I will cut it out and put each block in a baggy I like to be organized to. I love your blocks and the colors are wonderful. Blessings Sandra

I love the green, yellow, and red...it reminds me of a bowl of apples!

This maybe a silly question, but where can I find the pattern for the great granny square block?

So pretty! I like the way you organize...great ideas. I agree with you, those colors would make a great combination to use in a whole quilt! I've been wondering what combination to use in my next quilt and I think I'm going to try that one! Thanks for the inspiration. :)
